The hospital journey, step 1 of 5

One inbox for every referral, checked against Medicare

Requests for admission from surgeons' rooms, GP referrals, emails and faxes land in one queue. Before anyone rings the patient, their identity and entitlements are checked from the record.

The Acute Care Referral Inbox in HealthOS: a Request for Admission from a surgeon's rooms waiting at the top, with its procedure, MBS items and surgeon, above every other referral and the pathway each one is on.
Who takes part

The people at this step

The surgeon's rooms

Send a Request for Admission from a link the hospital gives them, or straight from their own rooms if they run HealthOS too. The procedure, MBS items and surgeon travel with it.

The admissions officer

Works one queue whatever the referral came in on. They check the patient against Medicare and the HI Service, set the urgency and accept the referral onto a pathway.

The patient

Has not had to do anything yet. Their first contact is an email with one link.

What happens

Step by step

  1. The request arrives

A Request for Admission lands under Requests for Admission at the top of the inbox. Emailed referrals are read into the same queue, so nothing waits in a mailbox.

  2. Who the patient is, checked once

The IHI is looked up through the HI Service, and Medicare and DVA are verified from the person's record over the hospital's PRODA connection.

  3. Triage and a pathway

Admissions set the urgency and accept the referral onto the hospital's pathway for the procedure, or onto a waitlist when there is no date yet.

  4. A booking

The accepted referral becomes the booking pre-admission works from, and the patient is sent their link.

What the next step gets

Pre-admission starts with a booked patient whose identity, cover and procedure are already on the record.
